Did you know that Philadelphia is home to – what many consider – one of the most haunted places in the United States? Known from movies like 12 Monkeys with Bruce Willis, Eastern State Penitentiary is an abandoned prison that has been opened to tourists and visitors as a museum and historical site in 1994. Since then, touring the former halls, cells, and yards of the prison (guided experiences and headphone tours available) offers a truly unique visitor experience with fantastic photo opportunities and intriguing perspectives on prison reform and rehabilitation.

But, the building’s history spans nearly 200 years, as it was erected as a place of reform rather than punishment, with cells designed to offer solitary confinement dating back to 1829. Over its more than 140 years of being actively used as a prison, Eastern State Penitentiary looks back at a turbulent history, with breakouts and riots, and notorious inmates such as Al Capone and Willie Sutton. During your visit, you’re able to dive deep into the prison’s history. Eastern State Penitentiary is one of Philadelphia Sightseeing Tours’ many stops along its 2-Day Hop-on Hop-off Loop.
